SOAR Program

Highly Capable Program – “SOAR”
Riverside School District

Riverside School District yearly notifies parents, staff, students and community of the identifying process for students in grades K-12 who could benefit from the Highly Capable program. You are invited to fill out a nomination form for a student you feel is gifted. The nomination forms are located in elementary, middle school, alternative education, high school and district offices. The process for nomination, screening, selection, and appeals is also available at the offices. Those forms need to be turned back into the school office by April 14th. The S.O.A.R. (Student Opportunities at Riverside) program is offered during the school day, starting the 2014-15 school year. There may also be extracurricular activity opportunities available, as well.

Parents of students nominated will be asked permission to continue the process for selection.

Riverside School District determines eligibility into the program through multiple criteria, including state and district assessments, as well as curriculum based assessments for determining levels of achievement in one or more of the core academic subjects and the Exceptional Creativity Survey, which identifies students with unique or outstanding creative abilities. Additional screening may include the Cognitive Abilities Screening and Testing tools. A district-wide selection committee will review student data based on district entry criterion for the program.

This upcoming school year will be the implementation of the new program, as set by state guidelines. Each grade level will have opportunities for accelerated programs for identified students. These activities will start the first week of school, with the exception of incoming kindergarten students, who will start the SOAR program in January. We look forward to providing activities to all eligible students in grades K-12.
